TTORA SoCal 1st Annual Overland Expedition
Anza Borrego State Park
Summary:
Day 1 - "A Little Variety" - March 21, 2009
We will be meeting folks to guide them to camp at the Arco Station on S22 and 86. We will be camping off of to S22 and Cross Over Trail in Ocotillo Wells. There are 2 options for the first day that both end with camping in Coyote Canyon. There’s folks that haven’t seen Font’s Point which is a must for anyone who’s never been to Anza Borrego. Additionally we added the Calcite Mine trail for Option 1 so that the more seasoned folks can get a little difficult action. Option 2 is to visit the more obscure parts of the park such as the Gas Domes and The Slot.
Day 2 – "Canyon Wheeling and Ghost Lights" - March 22, 2009
Day 2 investigates the ghostly side of the park. We will start by exiting Coyote Canyon and heading over to Oriflamme Canyon. Those who are leaving on Sunday morning can finish the trip after Oriflamme Canyon. For those staying we will be heading down south towards the Mortero Wash. The significance of this trail is that it allows you to hike and/or view the Carrizo Gorge Train Trestle. This is the largest wooden train trestle in the world and the site is often host to the mysterious Ghost Lights of Anza Borrego. The plan is to camp out at the site and hike to the train trestle to just gaze at its enormity or catch a glimpse of some ghost lights.
Day 3 – "The Far Reaches of the Park" - March 23, 2009
Day 3 is for those folks that are taking Monday off. We’ll be heading over to the Smuggler’s Cave and Table Mountain for some general wheeling and exploration. If you plan on being there for day 3 I’ll gladly discuss details with you. However at this point since there will be a limited amount of us taking this day off I chose to omit those details.
